ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH & PARISH CENTER
ELK GROVE, ca

St. Joseph's Catholic church expansion project is a unique and economical expansion of an existing sanctuary to accommodate an additional 150 parishioners for worship, increasing seating capacity from 250 to 400. In a clever solution, the expansion mirrored the structure and style of the existing exposed heavy timber truss design of the existing facility to create, in effect, two gabled roof structures sharing a common “eave” beam line. The linear seating arrangement of the existing structure was reconfigured to a new radius pew formation, in conjunction with changes to the altar area to conform to current church liturgical guidelines and to incorporate a new contemporary stained glass setting. At the rear of the sanctuary a new crying room/classroom was added, in addition to remodeling of the lobby, restrooms and chapel. The exterior of the building incorporates a new tower element and mechanical screen that functions as a monument sign.

This one story parish center, 13,000 square foot multi-use church-oriented social hall includes a large interior space for a combination basketball/volleyball court, meeting and activity rooms, a commercial kitchen with walk in freezer for church sponsored events, restrooms and storage facilities. The building exterior incorporates a more residential scale to fit the adjacent neighborhood by utilizing gable and hip roofs and building forms of varying heights.
