SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA
VALLEJO, ca

This 14,200 sf Catholic church on a hillside site, features a tile roof sloping up to a large skylight that is centered high above the elevated altar. The altar platform extends deep into the hexagon-shaped nave and is embraced by the 750-seat fan-shaped pew arrangement. All 750 seats are accommodated in only 10 rows, thereby creating an intimate feel this large space. The altar is flanked by the choir and baptismal font. A large vestibule wraps two sides of the nave and connects to a small 65-seat chapel. Wood and brick are used extensively inside and out, and are carefully integrated into a composition that expresses warmth, stability, security and fellowship.
